Oneida Casino Alumnus of the Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay-Bruce Nagel Unit

My tenure with the Boys & Girls Club began at the age of 10. As a newcomer to the Green Bay area, and no friends to speak of, my curiosity drew me to the Club. I had heard about the sports and social activities that the Club offered, and it peaked my interest to go check it out. Once there, I was hooked! I met many new friends and enjoyed spending time with the other children, the staff, and learning on the computers.

I had the opportunity to meet one of the staff members, Mike Schmitz, who I am proud to call a friend to this day. Being a sports fanatic like myself, I was immediately drawn to the activities he organized! Mike always taught us to be competitive, but also remain respectful. Life is just like a game, there will be ups and downs, wins and losses, but it is how you play the game that matters. These valuable life lessons not only taught me about competing in sports, but also how to conduct yourself outside of the sports arena. I was taught that people may judge you by your personality, but your character is what defines you.

I support the Club as a donor and board member because I believe in the mission of the organization, I believe in instilling a sense of competence, usefulness and belonging to a child. In the great words of Garrison Keillor, “Nothing you do for children is ever wasted. They seem not to notice us, hovering, averting our eyes, and they seldom offer thanks, but what we do for them is never wasted.” I know from personal experience that the Boys & Girls Club impacts our local community greatly by giving the children a place to go that is safe and clean, they help instill morals and values in children and offer them opportunities they may never have. With the help and guidance of an adult mentor, each child can discover how to unlock, and achieve, his or her potential.
